AATD Emphysema can lead to early-onset lung disease.
AATD or Alpha 1 Anti-Trypsin Deficiency is an inherited condition where the body doesn't produce enough of a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT). This protein helps protect the lungs from damage caused by enzymes released by white blood cells.
AATD can cause emphysema which damages the lungs and can results in breathing difficulties.
